3D renderings for a public art project proposal

During my summer internship at Grönlund-Nisunen, I helped with a proposal for an art competition for the wind farm in Mutkalampi (Mutkalampi tuulipuisto). The competition was looking for artwork to be placed at the wind farm's street entrance.

The average amount of energy that the Mutkalampi wind farm produces per hour is equivalent to 84,3 m3/h of firewood. This fact gave rise to the idea of creating a firewood rack 50 metres long and 2 metres high that would hold this amount of firewood. The firewood rack is designed to be backlit so that, at night, light can shine through the gaps between the logs.

My task was to depict the artwork in a foggy night environment from different angles (back, detail, and overall). In Unreal Engine 4, I tweaked the lights, emissive materials, and volumetric fog settings to achieve the look I wanted. I then also rendered variations of the scenes with and without background, floor, and fog. Tommi Grönlund then combined my renderings with photos of the actual wind farm's site to create an image of what the installation could look like at night.

84,3 m3/h was chosen as the winner of the competition.
